THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT

GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

There is quite a number of organizations, private and public, non-profit and for profit who give scholarships, grants and awards to both domestic and international students. Most of these grants however, are for U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens.

It is not easy to locate viable sources of funding for international students. There are many sources, however, it is difficult to locate and generally very competitive.

Many private institutions offer need based grants to international students and some offer teaching assistant positions to international graduate students.

Students who intend to enroll in an undergraduate or graduate program at a U.S. university should contact the schools that interest them.

Ask both the relevant department(s) and the university's financial aid office about financial aid for International students. There are many financial aid programs in many of the schools for international students especially for graduate students.

Many colleges and universities in the United States offer scholarships and other opportunities to study and/or conduct research at their institutions in a wide variety of disciplines.

There are also many organizations that offer some forms of grants, scholarships or loans. It is your job and responsibility to research and find these limited opportunities.

Many colleges and universities offer awards for students at their institutions and to be eligible you must either be accepted for admission or currently enrolled in the school. Most grants available are for graduate and post-graduate students. Undergraduate students do not have as much opportunities for grants as do graduate students.

You can get a more detailed information about school specific grants by contacting the financial aid or admissions office of the school.

Grant/Scholarship applications takes time to fill out. Write or call the most likely foundations to get a copy of their guidelines. Request all the materials you need to learn about and apply for the scholarship.

Allow yourself enough time to meet scholarship deadlines. When applying for a scholarship or any other  type of grant, make sure you follow the instructions carefully.

Whenever possible, type! A typed application is much easier to read. Thoroughly double-check all materials for spelling and grammatical errors and send all forms and applications via first class mail.

Often you will be required to submit one or more essays along with other application materials. The significance of the essay in the process of choosing a finalist varies widely.

Sometimes the essay is merely a device to ensure that applicants make some effort to apply and as long as there are no serious mistakes, the essay is not weighed that heavily in determining who gets the award; other times it is the single most important consideration and its quality must be extremely high.

When an essay is required and once you've written and revised and proofread it, give it to

improvements you can make. Remember, you have to sell yourself and convince the grantors to give money to you and not to someone else.

Your getting ahead in life largely depends on how much you are willing to work hard to get to your goal.

You are going to have to fill out applications and may encounter some road blocks and frustrations or rejection somewhere down the road. The odds, however, are in your favor that you will qualify for some sort of financial aid. The hardest part has always been finding these sources of money.

Higher education does not have to elude you simply because the price is out of reach. Those who have received financial assistance have aggressively applied to each and every funding source for which they were eligible. In searching for scholarships and grants, there is no substitute for thoroughness and determination.

We have recently completed what we believe will be of immense help to International students in locating funding for their academic pursuits. One of the major obstacles faced by International students have been locating sources of funding.

To this end, we recently completed a publication that details organizations, schools, international bodies that award scholarships, grants, fellowships, stipends, travel awards to International students and scholars. In it you will get extensive list of scholarships, grants, loans, fellowships, research grants, travel awards etc.

It shows you when to apply, addresses and/or phone numbers of the organizations offering them including closing dates. It includes funding from the undergraduate to the post-graduate level.
